Must Visit - Here are Some Places That You Shouldn't Miss in Kodaikanal

There are a few places that you should not miss if you are a real traveller. These are places that away from tourist crowds and also helps you explore the real Kodaikanal and it’s beauty.

      Kookal

About 30km from Kodaikanal, Kookal is a small remote village branching off the Poombarai-Kodaikanal road. One look on the access road to Kookal will make you fall in love with this place. Laid among the dense trees and pine forest patches all around, this road reminds me of the route from Valparai to Athirapally Falls.

      Why Kookal?

If you love nature at its purest and raw form and chase hidden or rarely known waterfalls, then this should be on your list. This place has no tourists whatsoever and is loaded with lush green meadows, a lake and hidden waterfall on the edge of the village that can be reached only be trekking down the hill for about 3kms. Kookal lake and Kookal Waterfalls are must visit when you are here.

Kookal waterfalls, is not for the faint of heart. To reach here, you must take a guide at the village. You will be charged anywhere between INR 250-500 per person depending upon the season. With the help of the guide you starting your trek downhill to reach this place. This trek moderate and not an easy one. But once you reach the waterfall, you will find that you are the only one there. Literally the entire waterfall to yourselves. Imagine that!

Note: Do not enter without a guide. You will definitely get lost.

      Poondi

Poondi is another remote village about 6km from Mannavanur Lake. If you love off road driving, then this place is for you! To reach here, you must have a 4*4 for sure.

This Dam Lake is about 3km into the forest only accessible by a mud road that is not laid out. Or the other way is to trek here. But this place is literally out of the world and worth every effort.

As we stood by the shores of Poondi Dam Lake, we were captivated by its sheer beauty. The calm waters stretched out before us, glistening under the warm sun. The surrounding hills and lush greenery created a picturesque backdrop, making it a sight to behold. It was a moment of pure serenity, where we felt completely at peace in the embrace of nature's wonders.

Berajim Lake, Silent Valley, Caps Fly Valley

All these 3 are enroute from Moir Point to Berajim Lake.

Only hiccup, you need to get forest officials permission to drive down here. Only 100 -150 vehicles are given permits per day, so you need to reach the forest officer office in Kodaikanal, opposite to Padma Lodge before 8AM and stand in the line as they issue passes from 8 30 AM to 9 30 AM. They charge 200 per vehicle to enter this forest area.

Once you get the permission, drive downtown. Moir Point. From here, you enter the most remote forest areas of Kodaikanal. On the way, you halt at Silent Valley, Caps Fly Valley and gaze upon the old forests and if you are lucky, some wildlife.

But the main attraction here is Berajim Lake, and Escape Road built by Britishers that has been abandoned for almost 50 years now and covered with vegetation and forest. This road used to take one from Kodaikanal to Munnar in 3 hrs by foot and 1 hour by vehicle. But now, one must go all the way around the hills to reach Munnar and it will take about 6-7 hours to reach via the normal route. You can read more about the history of this place here.

This hidden gem, mesmerized us with its tranquil allure. The pristine waters shimmered under the gentle sunlight, lotuses all around, while the surrounding landscape of rolling hills painted a breathtaking panorama, leaving us spell bound.
